Finding the Best Electrician for Your Project

5 Things to Look for When Choosing an Electrician in Vancouver

Finding and selecting the right electrician for a home renovation, new construction, or even a simple electrical repair in Vancouver can leave home owners or contractors scratching their heads. Should you look for the best price or the best rated? For some the right decision for choosing their electrician is somewhere in the middle. For others, choosing an electrician means looking at more aspects than price or quality.

1. Look for Red Seal

When selecting between various electricians, make sure they are properly certified and accredited to work on your home. Many handy men on Craigslist or Kijiji are simply not certified for larger projects which require permits for work.

2. Insurance Liability

Insurance is something that is often overlooked when selecting a contractor or  electrician for a project. Homeowners usually forget that they are liable for any worker completing work on their homes without proper contractors insurance. For the electricians themselves, insurance is important for the safety of their employees, tools, as well as their building materials.

3. Check BC Safety Authority

To check if the electrician you’re considering is certified, always check BC Safety Authority’s Contractor Finder tool. Simply choose “Electrical” from the dropdown, and enter in any information you know about the electric company, such as their name or phone number. If a result shows, they are BC Safety Authority certified. As an example, try selecting “Electrical” and searching for “Registration Number” 89141.

4. Read Customer Reviews

These days there are not only reviews for restaurants, but reviews for any type of business. For electricians and contractors, the best source of unbiased and trustworthy reviews is likely Google reviews. A simple Google search of the business name should show you reviews by previous customers. Other great places to look for reviews would be websites such as Yelp or TrustedPros.

5. Look at Work Samples

This is a tip that many home owners working on a new project forget to look for. Making sure an electrician can actually deliver the results they promise is arguably more critical than finding an electrician at the cheapest price. Check the electricians website for images of previous projects or repairs. Ending up with unsafe electrical, or even the wrong choice of lighting  can be a hassle to deal with.
